Leaf Blowers

(Blowers versus Suckers)

by David Shactman

A book store bin with a sign that reads "Poetry"
I jolt! awakened from my dream in heaven. Could it have been a seven-forty-seven? At six a.m. I’m startled to my core. But soon I realize as my heart beats slower The noise is just another loud leaf blower Belonging to my neighbor right next door. I know that fallen leaves can be a bother But yet we never did this to each other Not back when we were little girls and boys. What happened to those four-wheeled ugly sweepers With canvass bins that made the leaves all keepers? We pushed them and they never made no noise. I think that I could tolerate the muckers If all the noise was coming from leaf suckers. At least they’d pick ‘em up and leave things neat. But now they never care enough to stow ‘em. They simply rev their engines up and blow ‘em Right off into the middle of my street! Civility, I fear, is creeping lower Each time a sucker gives way to a blower. It weighs upon my mind, I do confess. We used to care much more for one another. We didn’t blow our leaves off on our brother. We quietly took care of our own mess. Could this be creeping in our nation’s psyche? Each time we find a thing that we don’t like we Shoot off the loudest guns and have our say. If other countries do not like the ruckus We tell them we are blowers not just suckers. We blow things up and then we walk away.
